Shi Hantao holds a MA in Arts Administration and Policy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has assumed roles for planning and execution of exhibitions and public events in a number of Shanghai-based art and cultural organizations, and has done extensive writings and studies into the field of art criticism and institutional research.

The Chinese contemporary art reaches its new height in the first two decades of the century. Particularly, the so-called “museum mania” happening in Shanghai during last 10 years, have brought to this city a great amount of exhibitions and events, and provided most of the impetus to the institutionalization of contemporary art in this country. By looking into some art pieces and projects related with Shanghai Project, Shanghai Biennale and other events at the Westbund art area, the talk will try to delineate certain features of Shanghai’s art scene and its structure, and also the complex relationship between the artists and the institution, also the art practice and the social context.
