Jiyuan SUN feels, observes, cries, and laughs as a curator, photographer, and sailor. After graduating in succession from the Department of Media and Visual Culture at Goldsmiths, University of London, he obtained certification as an RYA Day Skipper in Southampton, UK, in 2020. Jiyuan explores the knowledge, memories, and communities associated with the ocean, monsoon, and boulders. He is developing a non-Western maritime epistemological discourse of Maritime Asia by regarding the ocean as a laboratory practice field for conflict and inversion.
In 2022, he and Baiqi Chen co-curated an exhibition at the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai titled “Finding Maritime Asia”, featuring nine educational programs. In 2023, he assisted with the research project “Drawing the Lines: Spinning and Weaving Histories at a River's End”, initiated by Ho Rui An and Zian Chen, supported by the Ming Contemporary Art Museum and Duke Kunshan University. Additionally, he participated in the Meddle Melody curatorial summer camp in Seoul, South Korea.
