Yan Xiaolu was born in 1997. She graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2023 with a master's degree in architecture. She currently lives and works in Shanghai, as well as creating an essay film, Groundless Atopia, on the theme of technological images and spatial production in the context of digital capitalism. Fascinated by the invisible part of the many forces that shape space, and using the medium as a metaphor, her research has previously focused on the entangled relationship between media representation and urban theory, recently she extends the research themes into (technological) urban infrastructures and technological trajectories, (spatial) digital capitalism and spatial production, (cultural) psychoanalysis of the metropolis, and (temporal) Anthropocene and object-orientation. Xiaolu’s method of creation can be categorized as artistic research, which she believes in a traversing stance between old traditions and the new, and between the many disciplinary barriers that already exist.
