He is currently the deputy director of the Graphic Design Art Committee of the China Artists Association, vice chairman of the International Public Art Association (IPA), and dean of the International Public Art Research Institute at Shanghai University. He is the recipient of Shanghai University Weichang Scholar, and professor of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts at Shanghai University.
He served as a member of council of the Chinese Artists Association, a member of the Design Discipline Review Committee under the Degree Office of the State Council, a member of the Guidance Committee for Master of Art Education under the Ministry of Education, founding Chairman of Shanghai Designers Association, Vice Chairman of Shanghai Artists Association, founding Editor-in-Chief of Public Art, dean of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University. He was Awarded for pedagogical achievements.
Professor Wang Dawei has made outstanding contributions in public art and other fields. He was the first to propose setting "public art" as a discipline in art education in China. He founded the International Award for Public Art (IAPA) in collaboration with international organizations. He is also the initiator of the International Public Art Association (IPA) and Shanghai Public Art Coordination Center (PACC). In the past ten years, he has organized five editions of International Award for Public Art (IAPA) accompanied by series of activities. He also served as the curator and convener of the 4th China Design Exhibition and Public Art Featured Exhibition, while organized and promoted the Shanghai International Hobby Craft Expo, Shanghai Design Week.

Place Re-making is the starting point and destination of public art. Public art is a creative approach deploying artistic language and innovative methods to solve public conundrums. Various problems encountered in the process of local development also give public art a huge space to play its role. Through the analysis on some cases of the International Award for Public Art, the relationship between the three basic attributes of public art, i.e., publicness, locality, and artistry, and diversified development is discussed. And it is pointed out that diversified evaluating criteria are the promoter for the healthy development of public art.
