Visiting SUSAS 2023

The Shanghai Urban Space Art Season (SUSAS) is hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Government. It focuses on and discusses urban space-related issues based on Shanghai's urban renewal. Its key concept is to revitalize the city with culture, and construct the urban space with art, forging an artistic city where art merges into the routines. Since 2015, SUSAS has been held for five editions. The 2023 SUSAS takes "metro-biosis" as its theme. Through brilliant and unique exhibitions and public activities in 20 exhibition areas across the city, SUSAS tries to discuss and explore the questions of "whom we cohabit with" and "for what we cohabit".

The themed exhibition area in 2023 is located at the southern part of the WestBund in Xuhui District, a 5-kilometer riverside area from Longyao Road to Dianpu River. In that area, the former Longhua Cement Factory warehouse has been renovated and will be converted into the "Dome Art Center" for the opening ceremony of SUSAS. And the former White Cat Detergent Factory warehouse on the north bank of the Dianpu River will be transformed into the “White Cat Themed Exhibition Hall”, inviting artists, architects and ecological related institutions from home and abroad to create and exhibit over 40 art works. The outdoor space along the waterfront will be spotted with over 20 exhibiting works, including interactive art installations, ecological landscapes, art pavilions, etc. Aiming to be part of routines of people, the renovated space along the riverside invites audience to wander and enjoy a different view with every step.
