Gao Shiming

Dr. Gao Shiming is the vice president of China Academy of Art. He is the founding chair of CAA's Curatorial Studies Department (which is the first curatorial program in China), and the founding director of the School of Inter-media Art (SIMA), Hangzhou. He is also the initiator of the China Institute for Visual Studies and the Asian intellectual organization Inter Asia School (IAS). He is curator of many exhibitions and intellectual projects, including: Techniques of the Visible: the 5th Shanghai Biennale, 2004; Farewell to Post-colonialism: the Third Guangzhou Triennial, 2008; Rehearsal: the 8th Shanghai Biennale, 2010; Reflecta: the First West Bund Biennale for Architecture and Contemporary Art, 2013; "Future Media/Art Declaration" , 2017; From/To: the Frontier of Chinese Art Education, 2018 etc.

11.28 The action book for the exhibition

The exhibition work in my opinions can be divided into three levels:

1. The topic is constructed by works to form the problematic consciousness, which not only exists in art circle, but also has sociability. Exhibition planners should carry out artistic works in the social space, deepen social observation with artistic works, and construct social narration.

2. The critical and creative production situation is constructed. Criticism and creativity of arts are conditions. On the one hand, creativity is based on criticism. On the other hand, only to create can we exceed the general discussion of politics and ethics, so as to become artistic criticism in reality.

3. The art movement is developed to promote social progress. The highest target of exhibition planners is to propose to the society and era with artistic creation, so as to form the social progress. In this aspect, exhibition is a spiritual social movement, a social spiritual production and an action to promote social updating.

Exhibition should construct a situation, so as to generate difference and heterogeneous space in the integrated and automatic society. Here, we should distinguish from two kinds of exhibition: one is to construct a theme, bring artists' works to enter the arena, and put them in the existing conceptual framework. Therefore, works will be properly provided for the themes and hierarchical units of different themes and gain their position in the thematic classification. The other exhibition enables works to be exposed in the completed production program and social program, thus works can disturb and fight in the dynamic and temporary concentration, so as to agitate the feeling and reveal the significance. From the perspective of political philosophy, the former is "governance", while the latter is "politics". The exhibition in the significance is an "action book", which is not related to hedonic and bourgeois art, but is the productive and unchained art.
