AXIS Claudia Mattos

Claudia Mattos is a curator and writer based between Miami, FL and New York City. Her work is focused on the artistic practices of ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab and Native American) artists whose works intersect art, social action, and emergent technologies. She has most recently served as Assistant Curator of Media Arts and Live Events at The Baltimore Museum of Art where she curated exhibitions by Lizzie Fitch / Ryan Trecartin and the New York collective DIS. Previously, she served as Curatorial Assistant and Content Editor at Performa, the New York performance art biennial, and as Exhibitions and Programming Director for the Miami-based experimental art space Locust Projects. She has contributed to exhibitions, curatorial research and writing at The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Independent Curators International, New York; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; and the Rubell Family Collection, Miami, among others. Since 2016, Claudia has been a regular curatorial consultant and contributor to the exhibition program at David Castillo Gallery, Miami Beach.

The exhibitions and projects that she has curated have been featured in The Washington Post, Artforum.com, Hyperallergic, ARTNews, Fresh Art International, WYPR's Art Matters, and others. She earned an MA in Art History from The Courtauld Institute of Art, London; and a BA in Art History and Visual Studies from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.

Claudia shares a collaborative curatorial practice with Noor Alé, Assistant Curator at the MacLaren Art Centre, Barrie, Ontario. Together, they curate independent projects, screenings, and exhibitions as AXIS.
