Viola Yip

A Native of Hong Kong, Viola Yip is a New York-based experimental composer, performer, sound artist and curator. Her recent interests fall on designing new experimental instruments, exploring (1) the sonic materiality of found objects, (2) the interactions between our performative gestures, instruments, the space and the sonic result, as well as (3) incorporating composer-performer's body as a site for developing new pieces.

Her works as a composer-performer have appeared in places such as Missouri Experimental Sonic Arts Festival (MO), Elastic Arts in Chicago, UC San Diego, The Stone, Barbes, Abrons Arts Center (NYC), Boston Conservatory, Brandeis University (MA), Hong Kong Baptist University, Bowling Green State University (OH), LA outhaus (CA), Estalagem da Ponta do Sol Residency for contemporary music and electronics (PT) and internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt (DE). Her diverse artistic interest motivates her curating work. Her concert series "Squaring the Circle" in New York City has been advocating to curated programs that engages vigorous musical concepts,especially looking into curated programs as an expressive art form and the varied relationships between the space and the humans in contemporary music and sonic arts.

She is currently pursuing her PhD in music composition at Graduate School of Arts and Science of New York University.
